Why doesn't my mac recognize my phone so I can transfer files easily? Where do we lodge complaints.

Your phone is running Android 4, and Google removed USB mass storage support from that. That's why your Mac doesn't recognise it. It does support MTP for file transfer, but only Windows handles that out of the box (MTP is a Microsoft protocol, and Apple, let's face it, are not going to do anything to make Macs work more easily with Android).
What you need to do is install Google's Android File Transfer tool on the Mac. That should give you what you need (works fine between my Macbook and my HTC One).
