hi
this question might seem a bit odd, but i'm changing phone and was wondering if it was possible to save the sms from my current Galaxy S3 on my computer, so they don't get lost. i called AT&t under (800)331-0500 which should be the customer service but they told me that they don't deal with questions like that. does anyone know anything about that or has done that before, or know who i should address?

Welcome to Android Forums!

There are a number of SMS backup apps in the Play Store that will save the messages to your SD card. However, I'm not sure if any of them will create a file that is readable on a PC. They could certainly be restored to your new phone, and the backup file could be moved to the PC for safe keeping.

I hope this helps! If not, there are two avenues: You can re-submit your question with additional info the same way you submitted this one, or you can join the forums for a better back and forth exchange of info.

I agree, that should do the job: install a SMS Backup app (such as this one), copy the backup to the PC, install same app on new phone, copy backup to new phone, restore backup. If the new phone also has a microSD slot you could just make sure the backup is saved on the card and move that to the new phone.

There are also SMS Backup apps which will save them to your GMail account, which you can then view on your computer if you wish. Much slower to restore on the new phone though.

If you want to keep messages, a backup app with a regular schedule is a good plan, since if messages are deleted from the phone there is no way of recovering them if you don't have a backup.
