Considering TBolt -> Droid 4

Mayhem

Android Expert
I'm eligible for an upgrade in June and considering getting the Droid 4 and selling my rooted Thunderbolt. I love my TBolt but it may be time to move on.

Have any of you switched and regret it? How difficult is it to root? Does ROM Manager support this phone? How are the custom ROMs?

Thanks.

my wife has a Tbolt and loves my droid. As for your questions:

There is a 1 click root floating around that works great.
Rom Manager is not supported right now and probably wont be since the bootstrap is encrypted. You have to use saefstrap to load roms.
I haven't tried any customs. I just rooted so I could get rid of bloat and a few other reasons.

The developer support of this phone is pretty small. At this point we have some CM9 and AOKP nightlies, but not much else. There are two GB ROMs but that's it. If you are looking for an abundance of modding options, then I may look elsewhere, such as the GNex or the RAZR.

I do love my D4, and I am rooted, but I did it mostly to freeze the bloat and take screenshots and make TiB Backups, not flash ROMs.

As far as the phone's overall build quality: I love it. The blur is pretty non-intrusive, and it's pretty close to vanilla GB, and the QWERTY is superb and the hardware is solid. It isn't a big-time phone like the GNex or the One X, but it is the best QWERTY out there.
