constant disconnects (MOTO 360 Version 2)

Jeff Allen

Newbie
My new Moto360V2 is vibrating multiple times an hour to tell me that is is disconnected from my GalaxyS6. This would explain why I am missing some call and SMS notifications.

My GalaxyS6 is in my pocket and my Moto360V2 is on my wrist. My GalaxyS6 is paired with two other bluetooth devices (car and headphones) but they are not powered on.

Why are my Moto360V2 and my GalaxyS6 having such a difficult time staying connected?

Hi Jeff,

The things I would try in order of difficulty.

Just reboot both devices.

Forget and repair the watch.

Factory reset the watch, uninstall Android Wear. Reinstall and start from scratch.

I hope one of these solutions helps!

Super. While attempting the above ... TWICE ... Moto360V2 is now stuck in GMT! As you can tell from the shirt I'm wearing in my profile pic, I am on the east coast.

These smartwatches are killing me. This was my fifth one. I give up.

So Motorola says the problem is with Android Wear but Google says the problem is with Samsung. Samsung says that Motorola is the problem.

You know what's not a problem? Apple.

I recall during the first two weeks or so with my new Moto 360 (Gen 1), I had a tough time keeping a connection and ended up resetting my watch many times. After that, things seemed to settle out.

I think there are two reasons that we have connection problems early in the life of a watch which tend to iron themselves out later:
1 - The watch is more at risk for disconnects/connection problems after software and apps are updated. That happens a lot with a new watch.
2 - When you've had the watch awhile, you get practice at re-connecting and get better at it.

FWIW, I developed my own procedure that seems to works for me almost every time. Here's my procedure:
  1. OPTIONAL/ONE-TIME - Install Lightr app (free) from Playstore and use that to set your watch screen timeout to one minute.
    • Why do we do this? When you are attempting to pair watch later from the phone, a code will display on both your watch and phone. If your watch screen is off, you may miss the opportunity to pair. If you're screen timeout is very short, you'll be continuously tapping to keep the screen on while trying to pair... makes the whole procedure more difficult.
  2. Change my phone internet connection to Data (not wifi). This is an important step. It doesn't seem logical, but for some reason pairing doesn't work well when you don't have a good internet connection on your phone. My data connection is more reliable than my wifi.
  3. Go to bluetooth settings in your phone, press the gear icon next to your moto 360, and select "unpair"
    • do NOT unpair by selecting "forget watch" in the Android Wear app... if you do you'll have to factory reset your watch.
  4. Tap "Moto 360" in your bluetooth settings to attempt to re-pair.
    • Within 10 seconds, it'll either pair or indicate that pairing was unsuccsessful
  5. If it doesn't work, repeat step #4 again... 5 more times.
    • While you're doing that, since you've got nothing else to do, consider moving your watch and phone around a little about 3 feet from each other, keep away from other electronic/electric devices especially other bluetooth, avoid metal objects between phone and watch. I'm not sure this is needed or helps at all, but in theory reception is affected by distance, orientation (relative to antenna), shielding between devices, and interference from other devices.
  6. Take a break. Try 5 more times.
  7. If still didn't work, reboot your watch. Try 5 more times. (usually works on the first time after watch reboot)
  8. As a last resort (only AFTER you rebooted your watch and were unsuccessful), reboot your phone. Press "scan" 10 times in attempt to connect)
    • I say last resort because when you have unpaired your watch in bluetooth settings and then subsequently reboot your phone, your phone's bluetooth settings will forget the watch. Now the Moto 360 doesn't even show anymore in setting and you'll have to press "scan" to look for all bluetooth devices (not just the 360). I think that's a more difficult connection to establish. For that reason, definitely try rebooting the watch (step 7) before trying rebooting the phone (step 8).
  9. Charge up watch, Factory Reset watch and let it reload apps. Takes 30 -60 minutes, but doesn't require a lot of interaction.
  10. If that didn't work, nuclear option. uninstall Android wear and all your A.W. apps from your phone. Reboot your phone (clear cache in recovery for general principle). Factory reset watch again. Reinstall Android wear and re-set up your watch again from scratch.
  11. By the way, if you have a firewall or adaware software, installed on your phone, you might try disabling them at the beginning of this procedure.

I think that after the first two weeks, I've only had to reset my watch once or twice, and one of them was after an Android Wear software update. 90% of the time I connect by step 4 or 5. The rest of the time it pairs after I reboot the watch in step 7.

The above is just my approach based on my experience and what I've read. Here's what google says:

You might say: why should I have to go through all that? I hear you... things should just work. On Android and especially Android Wear it's not always the case. Now that my watch has settled after the last update and I've worked out my procedure, it's fairly painless. I usually just swap to data, unpair/repair in b/t settings and move on.
