"Contact does not exist" ... again

Android 7, Moto 5 plus. Stock Contacts app.
I know there are several threads on this subject, but my problem appears to be a little different. I had a contact marked as a favorite. This contact got deleted, but it still shows up in favorites (without the avatar). When I select it, I get "This contact does not exist". True, but how to get it off my favorites list? Long press has no effect, and I can't drag it anywhere. Very annoying. I've tried the sync with Google Contacts, but no change. How can I get rid of it?​

No idea if this will work, but have you tried re-creating the contact, faving it and then unfaving or deleting to see if it goes?

Long press the dialler app and open app info. In the app info press clear cache and clear data. This method may help you.

Tried both of the above suggestions. No joy.
