Contact lists

I have always stored contact lists on previous phones on the phone rather than the SIM card with surname first is it possible to do this on LG GT540 as I find it better to group by surname other than editing each contact and putting the surname where it says first name and vice versa. I hope this makes sense and I hope someone can help me.
