Contact names disappeared from Messages. Only number showing

The contact names on my Messages have suddenly disappeared and only the contact number is showing.

My phone (Moto G4) is synced with my Google account and I can see my contact list in Google but the contact names are not appearing in Messages.

I've scoured the web and tried various fixes including turning the phone on and off and doing a manual sync but nothing works. I've also tried 'force stop' but this didn't work either.

Anyone any ideas? This is driving me bananas

Ditch messages and install Textra as your messaging app

Thanks but I think the problem is bigger than this. There are no contacts in my contact 'book'. However, they are there in my Google account but they haven't been synced for over a week. I've tried to manual sync and import them but neither of these work. I'm stumped.

I have the same problem with my Moto G5 Plus with the Textra messing app. Let me know if you solve the problem as I am looking all over too.
