Contact problems, please help?

Hi everyone, hoping you can help. Just got a new Droid Eris and I'm trying to get it set up. I'm coming from a BB Curve 8330.

I haven't synced it with anything yet, all my contacts are in Outlook. This morning I was filling in my personal contact card and I entered in my facebook information and all of a sudden my contact list is there!!! The only problem is there are some duplicates and some weird things going on with the contacts.

1) How did my contacts populate just from entering facebook information? It looks like all my contacts are there (again, some duplicates) but only about 20% of my contacts have fb profiles. For example, my mom's contact information appeared but she does not have a fb profile - weird.

2) Is there a way to merge my duplicate contacts or does it have to be done manually?

3) I'm afraid to sync it with outlook now because I don't want to mess up the contacts in outlook (with duplicates, etc), so where do I go from here to get things cleaned up? Is there a droid equivalent to BB Desktop Manager?

I'm so confused and getting frustrated to any help with the contacts would be greatly appreciated!

Hate to tell you this, but I have owned my Eris for about two months and initially the HTC Sync worked fine, but then duplicates started showing up. I have unistalled/reinstalled several times. I have also cleared out the duplicates and the duplicates came back. I now have multiple copies of the same contact (up to 4 on some).

Sync has also managed to delete information in my address fields and now I will need to contact folks again to get their complete address. The phone seems to have a problem with the space immediately after the street address, but before the suite number.

I have communicated with support via email and phone many times with no solutions. The best they have offered is that the device is designed to Sync with Google (Cloud) and not with Outlook. I think its a bit lame myself since the phone is advertised to sync with Outlook.

Your instinct is correct to not Sync with Outlook just yet.

If you happen to find a solution, please let me know and if I find a solution I will let you know. Thanks

Hey, glad you posted. I think I figured out a way around all this. First of all I removed my contact list in my gmail account (which I don't use) and the contacts disappeared from the Eris. Then, I turned off all the sync settings for gmail on the Eris itself. Next I followed the sticky for syncing with Outlook and it worked beautifully! I've even cleaned up my contacts a few times and re-synced several times and everything is still peachy. Haven't had any issues. Let me know if this works for you!

Gink,
That should work fine. Just make sure you keep a backup of your Outlook file in case something goes wrong, or just backup your contacts.

Tried your suggestion. Still does not work. I deleted on Contacts from Phone. Uninstalled/Reinstalled Sync. Deleted Duplicates from PC. Dropped all Contacts from PC into Eris. (Still missing address data - Thanks Sync for deleting data) Sync after initial down loan. Sync created over 200 duplicates. Deleted Contacts from Eris again. Removed duplicates from PC. Transfered Contacts from PC to Phone. Each time I need to update my phone I am forced to transfer PC data to Phone. Really stinks to have to do it this way.:mad::mad:
