Could someone please suggest a good app to transfer contacts from an android phone to an android tablet.

If you use the same Gmail account the contacts will sync automatically.
There are a number of apps out there as well, but you could try my app Listables if you like.
Just FYI: It's meant for simple contact sharing (not advanced backup/sync).
