Contacts: Cleaning House

Noticed that even tho each phone contact was listed once, when I opened that contact there 4-8 listings of that person's information! For what reason there were so many listings inside a person's contact, I have no idea. Cleaning them out by hand wasn't an option. It would have taken half a day. Went to my Google Mail/Contacts and there were all those duplicates. Removed all the duplicates and then checked the phone. They're all gone :D I didn't realize it would be immediate. That's a bit scary :o

An easier way to take care of this is to go into contacts, select a contact and choose edit contact, then hit the menu and it gives you the option to join contacts. you simple join all the duplicate contacts and they combine into one.

willis1, I saw that and almost did it but backed out because I didn't know if it was for my situation and what it would do if it wasn't. All my contacts in people show up once but when you open a contact is where you'll find a gazillion duplicate references.
Thanks for letting me know it''ll work tho in case it happens again :)

Your problem is the same as mine. You have many different sources updating to your phone. Go online to gmail and look at your contacts. You can clean up and merge many of them there. Also, backupassistant has it's own list.
I simply made my gmail list perfert (yes, it took some time, I have 300+) Then deleted everything from verizon and let it resync with the gmail list. Now, I have 2 each, Facebook and a merged email list.

I am having trouble where I have contacts in my phone that don't show up in my gmail contacts, and vice versa, or I'll have their phone number in my phone and email in gmail, but can't access the phone number in gmail or email on my phone. I cannot seem to get all of them in both places and the same - can anyone help me figure out how to have all contact information the same in both places? When I tried adding the "other contacts" in gmail to "my contacts", then the number of contacts in my phone nearly doubled. Ugh.
