Contacts gone but in messages app

Hi

Hope someone can help.

Just been asked by a neighbour to look at her Galaxy S8. Had a message flash up saying that she had multiple contacts the same and did she want to merge. Said yes and her contacts have gone from the app but in messages, they are showing under a new tab. How can I get them back in the correct contact folder for her?

Thanks in advance

Restart her phone and after it's booted up, look in the Apps menu and open up the Contacts app to confirm her contacts entries are missing.

-- Which email service is she using? (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, etc,)

-- Did she have her Contacts syncing with her online email service or was she storing all her contacts only on her phone?
If the former, have her log into her online email account and make sure her contacts entries are still there.
If the latter, that becomes a stickier issue, especially if she didn't have any kind of backup solution set up.

You could try downloading and installing another Contacts app.

That app could/should discover any contacts and then you can use it to export the contacts into a file.

Then use the original Contacts app to import this contacts file.
