Contacts list issue

How can I make my contacts consistent? I want then all listed with last name first and even if I enter them "last name, first name". It seems as if the system randomly chooses which contacts are last name first or first name first.

Welcome to androidforums. If you go into your contacts and press the menu button, look in settings, you should see a setting to "sort list by" or something similar.

It would help us out if you could tell us the model of phone, android version, and any other info that might help...

to sort by name follow ap2ftw's instructions and select "sort by last name".
