Help Contacts show in hangouts, missing from dialer

My problem is that I have several contacts who show up in hangouts but then don't show up in my Google contacts or Dialer.

For example, my friend Jonathan. You can see that hangouts is communicating via SMS, and it know his name and number. Then, the contacts screen (set to show all contacts) does not show Jonathan's contact.

What's going on here? It's really frustrating.

The contacts that show in Hangouts but don't in Google Contacts have not been saved to the Google account. Add them to the Google account and all will be good.
