Help contacts (sync) not in sync settings list

Dear all,

Don't know which guru on here will find a solution.

I have a new phone. Google play was installed. I added my google account, but the contacts won't download that are in my google cloud. Normally, you'll always see your google contacts appear in the phone list.
I went to see the sync settings menu of the google account, but I cannot see
contacts
in the sync settings menu. I get all the rest: sync calendar, sync app data, sync chrome, sync drive, sync gmail, sync gooogle fit data, synd people details, but I DON'T see sync contacts.

Am I missing a google application to have sync CONTACTS appear in the list? I have added and deleted my google account multiple times, without success.

I have all google apps installed. The phone came with only google play.

Very strange. I've never heard of this before and a Google search turned up nothing. Sounds like you checked the obvious stuff already and there's certainly nothing I can think of to try. Very strange. I think this is a problem you need to discuss with Google.
