contacts sync only one direction

Samsung Galaxy S2, Gingerbread 2.3.6. I am able to edit/add contacts on my PC in the GMail contacts list and the phone syncs up but changes on the phone are not reflected in GMail. Isn't it supposed to go both ways?

Maybe related. My contact list on the phone used to show google and phone (green phone symbol) as joined contacts but now most of my contacts show google only. I can still make calls OK.

In the Google contact you add the contact into the phone contact list or you can add it to the Gmail account contact list. I am guessing that you are not adding it to the Gmail contact list. As far as contacts showing again in the app menu system you can choose which set of contacts show or all contact lists

I got this reply a year ago -- I didn't understand it then and don't now. Again -- I can log into Gmail contacts on my PC and add contacts they are immediately sent to my phone. Once this happens I can edit these contacts on the phone and the changes are reflected in Gmail. What I CAN'T do is add a new contact to my phone's contact list and have it appear on my Gmail contacts. I assign the contact on my phone to the My Contacts group but it still won't sync. Since new contacts (in my experience) are predominately created on the phone rather than in Gmail the sync arrangement seems sort of crippled (unless there is something I'm not doing right).

You phone has more than 1 phone database. You must have the phone book default contact list set to something like "My phonebook" or something other than Gmail contact list. I don't know what phone or app you are using on the phone but I am sure that is your problem so if you can't figure it out call your phone provider tech support or provide additional information.

To add a contact on your phone and have it appear in Gmail contacts, **it must be saved as a Google contact**. The 'My Contacts' group includes all contacts, including Google contacts, Facebook contacts, Skype contacts and contacts saved as 'Phone' contacts, i.e. saved locally in the phone internal memory but not as Google contacts. Only Google contacts sync to Gmail.

Nowhere do I see an option to save as a Google contact. I'm using the "Contacts" app that came with the phone.
