Contacts syncing with google apps contacts

Hi all,

Got my first Android phone this week, and really loving it, esp. synching with google apps mail, calendar en contacts.

I read om several threads that by default all contacts are synced, and, like several other people ... I now have way too many contacts on my phone. On Google i have a group "My Contacts" set up and filled with all the info i do want on my phone, and i have setup the synchronization on my android to include only the group "My contacts".

But i'm still stuck with all those unwanted contact-info on my phone. If i delete it from my phone, the info also get deleted from google (what i dont want)...

How do i get rid these contacts, without removing them from google?

Good question. I was going to post the same thing. I'll just tag along here for the bump, and hope someone more knowledgable can chime in.

I also had way more contacts that I need sync. I changed my sync method then removed the unneeded contacts from gmail, but I don't want to start deleting contacts on my phone if they'll also be deleted from gmail.

After I unchecked both options on the phone for syncing, then deleted the extra contacts in Gmail, then told the phone to only sync my contacts,....only the handful I have in gmail pulled down this time.

I'll be interested to see what happens when i take my old ATT phone to a sprint store to have the contact information transfered over. I'd hate to have to add every single one of my contacts into gmail as a contact to have them synced. I almost wish email and sms/phone pulled from separate lists.

Another note on viewing contacts on the phone;

While in contacts press menu then tap view. Select the list you want to see, in my case its My Contacts. Then it will only show that group. This was on my HTC Magic so your results may vary ;)

That is true, but when my HTC syncs with the Parrot carkit it sends all contacts to it ... including all kinds of one-time email adresses I have once used and are not very usefull on a carkit

Yeah, I have the same problem. Contacts shows "Displaying 64 contacts", but when I do "import/export" it saves 158. Not sure where those are coming from. When I go to Google.com/contacts it has 64 in "my contacts" and only 110 in "all contacts", so it doesn't seem to be that.
