Contacts take too much space

Hi community,

I have seen this issue been raised both on this forum and elsewhere, but I have so far not found a solution that helps me. This post is related to a previous, also unresolved, post that I am struggling with storage space running out.

I notice that my contact app take a staggering 381MB. In order to deal with this I have 1) de-activated all sync 2) deleted all contact (with the DeleteContacts app), 3) re-enabled sync with Gmail contacts only (so I do not sync with Facebook or LinkedIn. I have now 284 contacts, and it does not make sense to me that it still should take more than 1MB per contact. I suspect it is some kind of bug...Any information or idea that could help resolve this issue would be highly appreciated!

My phone is Oppo Find 5.

Thanks!

Try going into your phonebook and editing some contacts. It's possible that you have some data duplicated (multiple identical copies have been merged, all data are kept but the phone interface hides the duplication unless you actually look). This used to happen a few years ago, not seen it recently.

Check you don't have large contact pictures loaded as well - that would be one way of taking a lot of space up.

It depends entirely on what your contacts contain. It totally makes sense that each contact can reach beyond 1mb. Phone numbers, email addresses, notes, pictures, mail address, social media details. Pictures alone could be more than 1mb each if you have high res photos used.

Thanks all for input. For the vast majority of contacts I have just an email address and a phone numbers. A few have photos, which seem to be in low resolution. I believe they are all from Google users who have uploaded photos.

Is there a way to delete all photos?

Also, I suspect that this might be a bug. How do I easiest examine if that is the case?

Thanks again!

I have hundreds of contacts. Many have multiple phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, notes etc and around 50 or so have photos. Even so, contacts storage only uses 4.5MB. The contacts app itself uses another 1.75MB for a total of 6.25MB.

Something is definitely wrong. Unfortunately, offhand I don't have a suggestion as to exactly what that is or how to fix it.

Edit: You might try logging into your Gmail account with a browser and export all your contacts (check for duplicates first) as a backup. Then empty the contacts data on the phone. Clear the contacts app cache. Then resync the contacts to the phone.

I have over 1700 contacts.

About 25% have full info, names, company, addresses, all telephones, emails and notes. The rest will only have just the name, one phone and email. Only about 6-10 have photos (somehow forced onto me. I wish I could disable this).

On my phone 2.3.3, the contacts storage takes up 6.4 mb. On my tab 4.1.2, the same contacts storage takes up about 13.2 mb.

Thanks a lot for the tip. I followed it, but came back to the almost 400 MB. However, in the settings-> apps, I cannot clear data or clear cache. So I deleted the contacts on the phone with the DeleteContacts app.
