Hello,

This is my first touch screen phone, or anything other than a blackberry.
Still getting used to the phone. I liked BB, and usually not a fan of change.
The swype style typing has been really easy to figure out and use.

As someone new to android, can you give me some tips? Is there any things I should be doing with a new phone?

One thing I'm not sure on is closing apps. How do you properly close them? If I use the bottom right button, and close them like that, and I go to taskmanager, I still have a ton of programs listed taking up resources, why is that?
 
hey dude, well welcome to the band wagon (finally lol)

in regards to closing apps, since android 2.3.(something) the OS does a pretty good job in managing open apps - i.e. wasn't really a need for task killers any longer (some might say).

other apps are on by default, could be several reasons, try and check out internal app settings to see if anything mentions being left on to run a its service or something (e.g. i have a separate clock widget which will always be running)


but on the 1X? if you click on the recent apps softkey on the bottom on your screen (its the right one along the bottom, the one that looks like a square on top of another), you can close apps by just flicking (the apps you want to close down) upwards.

hmmm...suggestions and tips...

1) utilise the new folder option as much as possible to keep your screens uncluttered (unless you like that sort of thing.
2) having a power widget (one that contains the core switches such as wifi, bluetooth, screen brightness) is always helpful somewhere on your home pages - i use switch pro widget, its costs but ive been using the thing for like over 2 years now from my HTC hero days.
3) be sure to keep your screen brightness to a reasonable level, 30%-40% usually works for me in the office and outdoors (70%-80% if its sunny), saves on more juice due to the screen
4) if you've got a limited data bundle (although ICS now has this) i always install something like 3g watchdog to keep an eye out on data usage. with new smartphones you tend to hammer the data at the start so keep an eye out (unless you have an all you can eat package of course)
5) anything using bluetooth, fast mobile internet (HSDPA+) and GPS kills the battery so try to minimize this throughout the day.

there are more but nothing comes straight to my head :) leave the rest of the guys to chip in

Yeah I've been using the recent app button and closing them like that, thanks.

1) Yeah I need to figure that out for sure. I downloaded a bunch of games and now I have 5 pages of things.

3) Thanks. I work from home so it's not too much of an issue, but will be good when I'm out.
4) I just upgraded to six gigs. But I'd like to know how muc I'm using so I'll check that out too.
5) That's actually one more question. Beside the reception bars, I think that cone type icon with the waves means I have GPS on, right? So that's probably draining battery? How do I make sure it's not on at all. As I said I work from home so I don't need it, and our city isn't that large either.

One more question, how do I import my contacts from BB? I seen some advice but it was from 2010 so not sure if there's something newew. It said about using ABC?

Best way to import from a bb or any device is to use google mail. If you have a gmail account set on the bb it will sync to the cloud and then to any other device you set up with the same email.

I've come from a bold 9900 to the droid too. Always had a droid as well as the bb buy to save money dropped the plan for the bold and just have one contract now.

It's hard to get used to a soft keyboard over the excellent bold keyboard but practice does help. I can't get to grips with the swype keyboard though, doesn't seem quick enough for me.
