Converting 3gp video to PC

I've transferred a video from HTC Desire S to my PC. It's stored on PC as being 3gp file, with 8147 kbps bit rate, dimensions of 720x1280.

I'm using MediaProSoft software, appears ad free and was free.

I can output to several file types; AVI, MP4, MPEG, WMV, FLV, MOV. Each has different settings for output making a total of around fifty output types.

However, no matter what I do, the audio plays fine, but the video is either absent or the video looks squashed, as if squashed from top to bottom if that makes any sense, making everything too wide.

I want to upload onto YouTube, but also at some point I want to put video onto DVD. I would have thought I just needed a straightforward AVI file but its not having it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, but the problem is not converting per se, but rather the fact that the aspect ratio is all to pot for any video I've filmed with the HTC upright rather than on its side. It's long as opposed to wide and therefore gets squashed. Is there anyway to change aspect ratio before conversion, because options after conversion seem limited.

Surely other people transfer videos with HTC upright rather than on side without problem?
 
Found this on the net; suggests problem is the export video setting from phone. Any idea how to solve this? I've got an awful lot of videos on phone I wanted to transfer to Pc....it'll be a real pity if they all end up looking squashed.

The video picture is 16:9, but those black
letterbox bars make the finished video 4:3 .
Squashed face again. It can't all fit in the
16:9 frame! The black letterbox bars need
room too.
SOLUTION: Save video as 4:3. Common 4:3
frame sizes are 768x576 pixels, or 640x480.
 
Anyone? It's got to be a very common issue.

How do you retain the aspect ratio of a video taken with the phone held upright, rather than on the side? Never been a problem with photos. Am I missing something really obvious. ?
