Cooking GPS tracking into a ROM ???

OK I want to put tracking software in my phone. so if someone steals it I can find them and make them pay with a nice free trip in a shiny car with blinking red and blue lights :-)

anyway crooks are starting to smarten up. ie turn the phone off and "hard reset" the phone before using.

SO once a phone is rooted we can install custom roms. HOW about cooking GPS tracking software (silent in the background software) that is pre programmed RIGHT INTO the rom so even if they hard reset on initial boot up my phone will "check in" and tell me where it is.

Suggestions on how to do this? I would like to do this with my Prevail and my Evo and later the transform if I get that unit.

should be a way to program it so it can "do this" automatically without any programming IE cook the programming in.

This has been done before, so it is definitely possible. I used to run a MoDaCo custom ROM on my HTC hero, which had wavesecure baked into it so that it couldnt be removed. I think some if not all of their ROMs for other phones can also have wavesecure baked in via the kitchen.

Have a look, maybe there's already one for your phone (edit: just had a look, and cant see anything for the evo or prevail), and if not maybe you can get info on how to cook your own rom by asking on their forums: MoDaCo

nice. I grabbed theft aware that seems downright perfect !! onsale unbound for $4.49 euro too.

is theft aware server independent? ie once I register (just did that) does it no longer depend on itagent servers? or does it proxy through their servers?

IE if the company goes poof or is "down" for any reason will the software still function properly.
