Copy all data to new SD card

Hi,

I thought this should be simple, but have yet to find a solution for me that works. I have a phone with 4.2.1 and a 16GB sd card. I have a new 32 GB card. I have tried just copying everything from the old card to the new, but when I boot the phone, many apps say 'app not installed' and gallery will not see the photos that I have transfered onto the new card. Some apps seem ok, like poweramp (sees all the music). Both cards are Fat32 format. I used an Ubuntu computer to transfer the files, but have no micro sd card reader, so had to do it directly with the cards in two phones. I have a mac and an ubuntu comp (no windows PC).

As per other posts, I ahve tried to delete the cache on 'gallery' and 'media storage' apps, but they were both greyed out in the app settings.

So, how can I upgrade to my new 32GB card??

Thanks for any help, I apologise that this is probably somethings siimple and I am being stupid...

If you've linked apps on the SD card, you'll have to first unlink them (move them back to internal storage), then copy the files on the 16GB card to the 32GB card, then link the apps back to the 32 GB card.

The phone looks for the apps on internal storage. If the apps are on external storage, there's a link in internal storage, where the phone expects the app to be, pointing to the block on the SD card where the app actually is. Moving the app from the 16GB card to the 32GB card doesn't move it to the dame block on the 32GB card that it was on in the 16GB card, it just puts it where there's space for it. So the phone looks in the block that the app was in on the 16GB card, dosn't find the app there and gives you that message.

Data files can be put anywhere, apps have to be where the links say they are. No idea why Media Scan isn't picking up the pictures (Gallery shows what Media Scan finds). Maybe install a media rescan app and force a rescan? (You've rebooted the phone with the 32GB card since you transferred the files, right?)

Thanks, I see that is the problem. But I cannot unlink my apps to the sd.. everything under app settings is always greyed out and it says 'computing' for all the values.. so can't 'move to internal storage'. Yes I tried reboot sevetal times.

Don't bother with the unlinking. There are a few hidden folders on the old sd card that didn't get copied over, that's why. Since Android and Ubuntu are both linux-based, what Android considers a hidden folder, so will ubuntu.

Just put the old sd card in, connect your phone to your computer, tell your file manager on Ubuntu to show hidden files, and do the copy again.

Yes, I did use 'show hidden..' But this is solved now. Even though my phone showed no progress when 'unticking' the apps on sd under settings, it did actually unlink them. Now the apps work. Gallery still didn't work, but when I used another media scan app, which scanned for about an hour, it now sees the sd.. So everything seems ok.

Thanks for all the help.
