Help copy & paste problem

Hi
I'm running Android 4.4.2 on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition.
I'm attempting to do an extremely basic operation for computing, namely: copy & paste.
However, this does not seem to work with Android.
Here's what's happening:
Go to a website using Chrome
Place and hold finger over url until it becomes highlighted and the options: Select, Cut and Copy appear
Tap Copy
Open Gmail app and start to compose message
Tap and hold finger in message box in order to paste previously copied url
A blue marker appears but there is no option to paste
There are three menu items on the top line. One is a paperclip for attachments, the next is the send button and the third is an options symbol.
The options button shows: Discard, Settings and Help, neither of which is of use

Am I doing something wrong, does Android do copy and paste or is there some other problem?

Android does copy and paste, and the method you are trying to use would work generally.

However, I don't have either Chrome or GMail on my phone, so can't test this to see whether it's one or other app that's the problem.

Here's another thing: Copy the url of a Web page, open a blank Web page and tap & hold in the address bar. Nothing shows to give the option of paste.
Maybe the copy function doesn't work.
Grrr! There's no basic notepad in Android. Wait, I'll install one.
Ok, that's narrowed it down - I can't paste into a basic notepad either.
Suggests Copy doesn't work.

Just tried this with Chrome and Gmail on a Nexus 7. Works perfectly so Chrome and Gmail have the capability. I'm stumped as to what you could be doing wrong unless it's just something about the way you're fingering the screen.
