Copying the apk files from android market website

Hi,

How do I copy the *.apk file to my storage card from the android market website?

I was also trying to install the applications / games directly to my android phone (HTC Desire) using the HTC Sync software. When I click on install for that particular application, the install button changes to installed with a message saying that the application will shortly be installed to your phone but nothing can be found on my phone nor can I find it anywhere on the PC

You can't.

The Android Market automatically installs the app for you on your phone.

If you want to backup that app for a future reinstall, you can find the .apk file on your phone using Astro file manager as explained here.

Just have the market push the app to your phone. Desktop syncing is for iLosers.
