Alright so I got my HTC 10 today. After an hour playing around; transferring files and setting it up exactly how I wanted. I then foolishly decided to add a pattern lock to it; I used a pretty simple pattern, locked the phone to test - then I put the pattern in... and it didn't work. Yes the pattern I made 3 seconds ago apparently I forgot it.
I tried every combination of the shape that I was certain I remembered. I got pretty sad, I decided that restoring to factory default was my only option. I couldn't figure out how to restore it, not even a with a Google search (too new I guess). When I turned it back on, it took me to this "Your phone is encrypted" screen where I had to put in my pattern within 30 tries or all my data was reset. After 15 attempts the screen went away, making it look like I got the password right, so it took me back to the original lock screen, I tried the same pattern that worked for the other screen - didn't work. So at this point I knew I wasn't stupid and it was just a bug.
After a bunch of Googleing I found this website 'https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager?u=0' which lets me locate my phone and do a couple things. Apparently I was able to set up a temporary password with the device manager which would let me access my phone - That didn't work, it just said "already has a password" or something. Then after playing around with this tool to no avail, I tried the first pattern (the one that worked on the encryption screen) and then it miraculously worked... somehow.
So yea, don't set up a pattern password until they patch this I reckon
