custom ringtones for each contact

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but I couldn't find it when I searched.

I'd like to have a custom ringtone for some of my contacts, such as wife, office, friend, and then the default contact for the rest. I need to know how to load new ringtones and assign them to certain contacts. Do I need an app or can I do this already? Thank you.

I have android 2.1 on an HTC Hero.

Well, I MAY be able to help you out. I have a Motorolla Droid. For me, while you are playing a song that you want to use as a ringtone, I touch the menu bar and in icon appears that says "Use as ringtone". Press and walla...it is saved to your ringtones.
Next find the person on your contact list that you want to have that ringtone and hit options. It will tell you what you default ringtone is for that person . Chose the dropdown arrow to the right of the screen and you will access your saved ringtones. Select and bingo...you got it.

Hope that this helps....before I knew that that feature existed, I downloaded several ringtones at $2.99 each. (shrug)

I am a very new user of the Droids. But here is a little something more I learned that you might appreciate.

You can send any audio file you want to your Droid phone and use it as a ringtone. Only thing is that audio file has to be in MP3 format.

Send it as an attachment to your gmail account. Download it to your phone. Select the menu button and you can set it as a ringtone.

I have literally hundreds of miscelanious(sp) WAV files of little snippets of speech, misc sounds, etc... I convert them into MP3s and send them to my phone. I have a lot of colorful ringtones now.

In the phone SD card's root folder. Create a folder called "ringtones".

Place whatever custom ringtones you wish into the folder.

Go to your contact list, select the contact you wish to set a custom ringtone for.

While viewing the contact details, press the menu button, then press options. (May be different for HTC sense, im on a nexus one)

From there you can select a ringtone for that particular contact, be it a custom ringtone or any of the defaults available in the phone itself.
