custom ringtones/notification sounds

Hello everyone. I've wanted an android device for as long as I can remember, ever since I saw the first droid does commercial. At first I thought that I would just get a phone because the number one thing that I do with my devices is text, but after a while I decided that I was going to get a tablet because I don't really talk on the phone and I figured I might as well have a big screen for surfing the internet.

Anyway, fast forward to now and I finally got the other day a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 from Telus in Canada and I love it.

This is going to be a stupid question, but I did search before I asked it. I know how much that drives people nuts on forums when you don't. I did see that there were similar threads for other devices, but not for this one. I apologize if I've missed them in my search.

I'm wondering how to get custom ringtones/notification sounds. ( I'm still really new so I don't know the correct terminology yet) Essentially I'd like to be able to customize the sound that happens whenever I get a text on the app that I downloaded for text messaging. The app in question is Textplus if that makes a difference. I'd also like to be able to customize the sounds that happen on other things as well. I tried putting mp3 files in the ringtones folder but that didn't work.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could offer. I apologize for my n00bish question, and thank you very kindly for your time.

EDIT: I found it. Just in case anyone else ever has to try to find this, you go to audio folder then Notifications and put the sound in there. Apologies for the thread.

No need to apologize, hishighness! We're a very friendly bunch here, we hope you stick around. Always great to have the solution in the thread as well for others with the same question. :)

In addition, Zedge is a great app for downloading all the notification sounds, ringtones, wallpapers, etc., you could imagine. And so easy to use.

I use it both on my phone (Galaxy S2) and tablet (Galaxy Tab 10.1)

I prefer to search the web for sound effects instead of ringtones. I find that I find better quality sounds that way.

Make a folder on your tab's storage called ringtones, another called notifications, and a 3rd called alarms. I like to put mine inside the "media" folder to keep things neat and tidy.

Android is smart enough to see these folder names and include the sound files inside in the respective lists on the device when you select alert sounds.
