Root Custom Rom Kernel BaseBand Question

Hi, I'd like to try a new rom for my X10. I'm currently on Rogers Canada. I have 2.1 update 1. I added dual touch before it came out through the Rogers update. I also have rooted the phone and I have Xrecovery, Busybox installed. My phone's kernel is 2.6.29 and the baseband is 2.0.46. I've read and think I understand how to do a rom install using Xrecovery in fact I have already done the intital backup. I am however stuck on the baseband version. Most of the roms I see say the you should be on baseband 52 or 54 however I haven't figured out how to update my baseband from 46? Do I have to flash my phone with a genaric rom first which has the higher baseband and then apply the custom rom on top? I was hoping to try flashing Blue Sparks or FreeX10 if that helps. Thanks.
