Root custom roms??

i have a rooted motorola defy with software 2.2.2. its overclocked to 1ghz and i have changed the fonts for all text. i tried to install a custom rom and ended up getting stuck on the red motorola screen. i read 3 different ways to install a custom rom and it seems the one i chose didnt work. i have recovered my phone thanks to the motorola software updater so thats not the issue. i just wanted either step by step intstructions that work or the easiest other way to do it. like a rom manager (which i have) but that seemed to fail too. lol. thanks in advance
