Custom Routes for Google Maps

treddie

Newbie
Hello!I have tried to find a map application that has a very simple custom route function. Something where you draw the route by tapping the screen at arbitrary waypoints. Then, the distance along that route is calculated every time you add a point. Seems like such an obvious thing to do, but only one app I found did anything close, and it was a pain to use. Can't even remember what app it was.

So what I was wondering is, is there an add-on, somewhere, for Google Maps that does this?

Thanks for any replies!

Hi, as far as I know there is no 'add-on' available for Google Maps.

However, OsmAnd has this function :-

I use it extensively, particularly for checking hiking routes and find it easy to use so it may not be the one you have tried.

Another advantage is you can download the maps to your device.

Hi. Sorry for the delay. Been very busy lately.

First, thank you very much for all the replies!

I took a look at the suggestions, but unfortunately, they don't really have this function, although it may seem like they do.
But...I DID spend another hour trying different search criteria and FINALLY found three programs that have it:
ViewRanger GPS
Map Distance Meter
Maps Ruler.

Although ViewRanger has the best node (waypoint) editing via a finger (the movement icon is offset from the point to be moved so that the point being moved is not obscured by the finger), it is clumsy in other respects, in that it is near impossible to accurately drop the points on the screen, for the same reason. Also, a bit heavy on going into menus to get to the editor, since you cannot simply go from node to node, you must select Edit > Move point, for each node! Also, for the life of me, it seems the creator of the app does not understand the importance of kilometers and miles...Only offers meters and yards! Another annoying thing is they want you to register for the cloud. Just go back a page, and you're in without having to register.

Map Distance Meter seems cool, except the pushpin icons are annoyingly big and don't need to be there...Simple little circles or squares would be perfect. But the most annoying part is, you cannot edit the path. :(

In my opinion, Maps Ruler is the best. Only problem is that when you edit a node, your finger is so big, you can't see underneath it to accurately judge where to move the point to, without a lot of difficulty. Might require a capacitive stylus to make that work quickly, but who wants to carry around a stylus? Also requires menu operations to get to the node editor, but once you're in, you can adjust any node at will, one after the other. This little app just needs some basic conveniences. Then, it would be perfect.

All three are free, with ViewRanger GPS, and Maps Ruler offering pro versions.
