ok so this really caught me off guard and i wanna make sure it doesnt happen to anyone else.
CWM by default saves backups to the internal storage.
i went to make a second backup, cwm failed, and booting up i got a "system is low on memory" notification.
naturally, having 4Gb internal mem, this threw me for a loop.
moral of the story:
when you go to make a backup within CWM, select "backup to external sdcard"
that is, if you dont want your internal space sucked dry. i hope this helps anyone
