Data monitor for tethering only

Android Enthusiast
Hi folks looking for some help. I am currently on the One Plan on 3 in the UK. Currently this allows unlimited tethering. I do use this as I take my 8 inch tablet to work and find browsing etc. on it at lunch time easier than using my s3. Unfortunately 3 have just announced that for all new contracts or on your next upgrade, this unlimited tethering is being reduced to 2 Gb. I am looking for an app that will allow me to measure how much data I am downloading onto he tablet from my mobile hotspot. I have went into settings and data usage and set my tethered connection as a mobile hotspot and hoped this would work, however it still seems to count all data downloaded even using my home wifi. I am looking for an app that will allow me to set which connection I want measured and to be able to gauge it for a month to see if my lunchtime use. exceeds 2 Gb. All help appreciated.

Thank you, I did try data management it does not seem to differentiate between my tethered mobile hotspot and my combined WiFi use on the tablet. If I am not using it properly I would appreciate any additional instruction. Thanks again

Ok let's do this step by step.

If I understand you correctly, you are tethering data from your S3 to your tablet, with the S3 being enrolled in the One Plan by 3

Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm on your S3. This will detect how much data was sent by the S3 via tethering. Actually this can be seen by the phone's own data manager.

You are looking at the wrong place. You should look at the device that is tethering (your phone) if you want to know how much was used via tethering, not the recipient device.

Ok. Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I have installed it on my s3 and I can see 3 tabs, mobile, roaming and WiFi. If I select WiFi, will it show what has been used, using the s3 as a WiFi hotspot, rather than showing how much the s3 has downloaded using my home WiFi, for example.

Ok have tried downloading from you tube and when I look at the WiFi tab on my s3, there is no data. However and this might be where I have misunderstood, if I look at the mobile tab. There is an app called os services that does increase, would this be how the tethering is identified.

Tethering is not counted as WiFi. It seems you don't understand the terminology. Those three tabs refer to where the data is coming from. If you are tethering, you are getting data from your network, so of course it would show up under data, not WiFi. And yes, the OS Services refer to the data used for tethering.

The WiFi Tab records the data received from a WiFi connection, and you aren't using one.

Thank you, you have explained it perfectly for me. I was looking at it from the angle of measuring data used by the tablet using wifi, whereas you are right, I need to measure from what the phone says. The data usage on the phone does in fact show the figure I need without the need for the data manager app. It shows it in an even more straight forward manner as tethering and portable hotspot. Thanks for your help, I can now monitor what I am using tethering my tablet, this will help me make my decision whether to stay with three or change network when my contract is up. Cheers.

I have the same issue, go to settings, data usage and you can find the droid icon and it says Tethering and Mobile Hotspots. Didn't see this on Jellybean on my Galaxy S3, I have a Galaxy Alpha as of last week with KitKat 4.4.4 :)
