Data Question on Smartphones

I have some questions.

I am getting the 200mb plan on ATT. I use MOSTLY wifi (at home, work, restaurants) ... BUT I read that windows phone 7 (samsung focus) has had problems of charging data to their phone (even while they were sleeping).

I was looking at the Samsung Captivate ... do you have that same problem with "phantom data" appearing on your phone? Does data run on the background even when you aren't using the phone?

The Focus (Windows 7), runs programs in the background all the time and to get full use of that phone, it needs to be on. Bad news is that it takes up data (because when you are in sleep mode, it automatically reverts back to 3g).

Not sure about the android phones (captivate). Could someone please explain how their data works for them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Okay ... I have just read about some people being charged data around 1-2 am.
The problem people are having is that when they are on wifi, when it goes to sleep mode it tuns 3g back on and wifi off.

Just makes me a little nervous

You have to be careful as some Android devices will do the same thing, but it is controllable.

When I first got a SE X10 and stayed in a wifi site 100%, I was still getting data charges. I finally realized every time the device "went to sleep" it would turn off the wifi and turn on the 3G. After a little searching, I found a setting to not turn off wifi and I went a month with about 5M of usage.

Now that I have a Dell Streak, it is a little different. It has a simple drop down which includes the 3G & Wifi toggles, so I never turn on the 3G, except when I leave the house or know I want to use it.

^ do you know some of the phones that are easier to control the 3g?

I looked at the iphone and it had 1 setting that said, turn off cellular data. Seemed pretty easy to me without having to download apps to keep it on/off.

Are there other phones with quick capabilities like the iphone has to turn on/off?

I appreciate the help ... I am a "newbie" to all of this. lol

I can only say from experience and I have only had 2 android devices, I have been a loyal Blackberry user for the last 6 years.

The Sony X10 didn't have anyway to easily turn it off, at least none that I found in 29 days :D The Dell Streak is really easy to turn it off. You just tap on the status bar and get a drop down that has wifi, 3g and a few other options that toggle off and on.

Both my Android devices were/are running 1.6, At&t is suppose to release the 2.2 update next week for the Streak.
