Data status display (upload/download)

This may be a weird thing to be asking about (I just got the Nexus 5 today), but is there a way to display when the phone is either downloading or uploading on the status bar thing? My old phone had it so I thought it'd be cool to have it on this one as well.

The only way I'm aware of adding that feature is to root and load a ROM that supports that feature. I believe Google removed it from stock Android.

If you look in the quicksettings menu its still there.

The official word on it:

Google removed it from the main notification bar because it was using up CPU cycles to monitor it even if you weren't paying attention.

Googles new location has it available if you want to check it, but won't waste battery when you don't.

there are many apps on the play store to do it.

no root/rom required.

Battery Widget Reborn, Internet Speed Meter, to name a couple.
