how do i get to data connection

If you have mobile data included in your phone plan, then you should be able to just turn on mobile data...
Head to "Settings"=>"Wireless & Networks"=>"More"=>"Mobile networks" and the check the "Data enabled" tick box and you should be able to connect to the net.
If you do not have a data plan, then you would have to use WIFI...
Head to "Settings"=>"Wireless & Networks" and there should be an option to turn on WIFI... this would only work if you were able to connect to the network (as in, if it was your own/an unprotected WIFI network).
If you have any device specific questions, why not sign up and head to your phone's sub-forum (go to Android Phones - Android Forums and search for it), so you can connect with other users of the same device
