Dear Motorola, Please Unlock RAZR

i don't know if i would be more inclined to get the RAZR with an unlocked BL, but it would certainly put it closer to "on par" with the Prime.

another factor would be NFC. i've seen NFC being mentioned quite a bit in conjunction with the Nexus, but haven't seen any mention of it with the RAZR. i think, going forward for the next 2 years, this is definitely something many people would want to see.

It would definitely add a huge plus to the RAZR to have an unlocked bootloader.

I am interested in the NFC also, but I think it will be a while still before locations where it can be used will be more universal. I still think there is a bit of a fight to figure out who's platform retailers want to use and buy hardware for.

I have a question about unlocked bootloaders though. Who carries the big stick in the discussion? Would Verizon or Motorola have more to do with it? What does each party gain in keeping the bootloader locked?

It wouldnt effect my decision. It didnt effect my decision to get the Droid X1. An unlocked bootloader isnt a deal breaker for me. But...I would definitely love if it did have one.

imo nothing trumps the ability for the G Nex to receive updates straight from Google and 6 - 12 months sooner than the rest of the world.

Unless you root and then it doesn't matter. :p

Seriously if I get the Prime I will not be getting my updates OTA, I'll be installing them myself...so this isn't a plus for me.

even if you root you still won't get updates as fast.

even for rooted users we got GB for the DX in May of this year....6 months after the Nexus 1 had it.

I had to go back into my posting history to be sure...but I was running a ROM with Gingerbread parts in the first part of January and trying full on Gingerbread ROMs by early February. I ran CM7 nightlies for at least a month or so. It was fun! Eventually, though, I came to realize that GB just didn't get along with my particular OG so I went back to Froyo for stability. Anywho, if you follow the devs the wait on a new ROM is more like a month, not six, IF you are on a phone that has a very active dev community.

For updates and the dev community, its a lil more to it when it comes to locked, encrypted bootloaders.

The Droid 1's bootloader is wide open compared to the Droid X1's. But, there was progress made recently with the Droid X1 and custom kernels so it might be a lil on par with the Droid 1 as far as updates. Even with the bootloader being locked down so tight it had a very active dev community.

It would be nice if the bootloader was unlocked but if i had the money to buy it I would regardles if it was or not. I own a DX1 and a fascinate and the Dev community for the DX seems stronger even with a locked bootloader and it being older.
