Default email app will sync Gmail, won't sync Hotmail?

Recently I changed my password for my Hotmail account and tried to update it on my Galaxy S3 default email app to no avail. So I deleted the the Hotmail account and re-added it. It took the new password, but when I tried to sync it; it displayed no new messages. From the default email app I sent a test message from the Hotmail acct to itself. It showed up in my inbox on my PC but not on my phone.

Then it gets weird. Seven email messages show up on the phone about 12 mins later (six older, and the test email). So I tried another test email. That one showed up about an hour later. I went into the sync settings for the Hotmail account and noticed the "sync email" option is greyed out whereas it is not for the Gmail account.

The Outlook email app will work for the phone, but I'm used to the default app and like that it combines both Gmail and Hotmail. It just seems to have a mind of its own when it will display the new email msgs, and the manual sync doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

First, is the Hotmail account setup as IMAP or POP3?

Second, have you checked to make sure you are using the correct settings for Hotmail on mobile devices? IDK about Hotmail, never used it, but sometimes desktop and mobile server settings differ. For example, Time-Warner Cable's Road Runner uses different server settings for desktop and mobile.

Thanks for your replies. I found out that Hotmail doesn't support IMAP and instead uses their own proprietary protocol called Exchange ActiveSync. I don't know if this is relevant, but per Wikipedia it says Google previously offered support for ActiveSync for free google apps, but pulled the support in 2013. So I don't know quite what that means as the the app I'm using is Google.

Anyway, I deleted it again and went back and manually configured it as a generic email account which then gave me choices of POP3, IMAP, and ActiveSync. (I'm assuming before when I set it up as a Hotmail account it would just default to POP3 as it didn't show any choices).

With the ActiveSync it would then give me the time interval options and the ability to sync it manually.

You can sync your Hotmail account (email, contacts, & calendar) through your built-in Android apps for email, contacts, & calendar. That's what I do. It works great-- and if you optionally set it up to "push", it will sync new emails almost instantly (though your initial sync may take a while). There is no need to install the Outlook app.

In step #4 of the following link, you'll see step-by-step instructions for adding a Hotmail account to your Android device. The link also explains how to sync your Android phone with the PC-based-email clients, Outlook and Windows Live Mail, but if you don't care about that, then you can ignore most of the post and just follow the instructions in step #4. (However, you may appreciate the subsequent few paragraphs regarding synchronization & display options.)

FYI: Hotmail uses the MAPI mail protocol (not IMAP or POP). To Android, Hotmail's servers look like corporate Microsoft Exchange servers. That's why you'll be adding your Hotmail account as a "Corporate" account ("corporate" being a misnomer).
