Default keyboard Galaxy Tab A

Can't seem to change default keyboards on my Galaxy Tab A. I'm Seeking a keyboard with a DEL key, like Google's or Swiftkey. Can't find a path in SETTINGS to change away from SAMSUNG. Web searching says to go to PHONE SETTINGS which don't apply of course.

I have the Google keyboard app downloaded but don't see a way to implement it.

I'd much appreciate some help here.

Thanks for trying to help, Dannydet. However, when I get to KEYBOARD there are no clickable options. That has been my problem. The default Samsung keyboard has a check mark and I can't find any way to change that. Settings just seems to be locked. On this other tablet, a Tab S w Android 6.0.1, the (default) Samsung keyboard has just what I'm seeking on my Tab 2, a DEL key, and a RIGHT and LEFT key. Navigating during typing is so much better than when only a BACKSPACE key is available. Also, I don't want to deal w two different kb configs.

Ah, computers! We love 'em; we hate 'em. Right?

Welcome to Android Forums, Donald Cooper! Any relation to the infamous DB Cooper? :D

Having read through your posts, which includes: "I'm Seeking a keyboard with a DEL key, like Google's," I may have a workaround. Please bear in mind that I have no experience with Samsungs and can't guarantee this will work on them.

Okay, first install the keyboard I use, Hacker's Keyboard. I love it, and have used it forever, but, alas, it doesn't have an obvious [Del] key. So, assuming you don't want to use it...

Open it via its icon in your app drawer. Press its 'Enable keyboard' button. You should see Gboard, but it'll be grayed out (at least mine is). Find Hacker's Keyboard and enable it.

Now choose its 'Set input method;' you should see something like this:

I think you can see what to do next. :)

But while I've got your attention, I'd like to highly recommend Hacker's. It's loaded with visual and practical settings; this is how I've made mine look:

By pressing the [Fn] key, it switches to:

And, voila!, there's the [Del] key. :)

Did you download AND install gboard?
If you did, then in that screen you should be able to see both keyboard and gboard listed. If not then maybe Samsung has that option locked out as you said...

Thank you Moody Blues for a detailed, attractive message. I'll certainly investigate. It's amazing to me that guys like you find and implement such things and then take the trouble to help duffers like me.

Also, Dannydet, thank you for your further assistance. I'll investigate your suggestion also. Maybe I did indeed misstep in the prep, in which case Samsung couldn't offer me an option.

Will let you know results later.
