In the folder DCIM there are two subfolders - 100Media and Thumbails. What is this thumbnail folder for, and can I delete the thumbnail folder without removing my actual photos taken with the camera?

The thumbnail folder is just what it sounds like. It is the place that the previews of your pics are stored (called thumbnails)
for example when you open the gallery the small pic you touch to show the full size pic is a thumbnail
You can delete the thumbnail without losing the actual picture but they will just reappear the next time you open the gallery
