I accidentally deleted texts from a friend and would really like to get them back. I have a motorolla droid razr and my carrier is Verizon. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. . .

You are most likely out of luck. If you have a recent Nandroid backup they may be contained in it, but for some reason I don't think that is so. I periodically use SMS Backup & Resort to make a backup for the exact situation you have experienced. There may be a solution but I am not aware of one.
Edit: you can also try your carrier, they may be able to help. On the lighter side if you have an in with the NSA they definitely have them.
