deleting gmail email from phone only

How can I delete my emails on my gmail account on my phone without deleting them on my inbox on my computer
If i close the background data it does not notify me of incoming mail
I have to refresh to check for messages

What kind of phone? If its an HTC phone, you can use the Mail app instead of the Gmail app.

You should be able to use the Mail app, and there should be options to keep emails on the server.
