My phone is using credit when I have not used phone at all. would something be running that is using all my credit?

Do you have data enabled? If you do, it will keep syncing with your accounts, and apps will continue to communicate, regardless of whether or not you have them open or the screen on.
Go into settings and make sure to turn mobile data off when you are near a wifi connection. Wifi does not use your device's account.
