hi guys ive sorted out these 2 issues with my desire hd and i know a few others are having problems with these issues
first not being able to select your own song as a sms tone
remove your memory card and connect it to you pc,
go to the folder called media, open it up and there should be another folder called audio open that up and you will have a folder called notifications open that up and place your mp3 into it
now put you memory card back into the phone and when you go to change your sms tone you should see your mp3 there
2nd is the poor volume on the dhd,
decide what mp3 your want as your ringtone
then download virtual dj to your pc

open it up and drag and drop your mp3 onto the turn table, whilst the mp3 is playing adjust the gain, high, meduim and low buttons to your ear thus making the mp3 louder, click cue once you have got the loudness you like without distortion
now click on record, decide where you want to save your mp3, then click on start recording and then click play
your mp3 will now be recorded at the volume you have just set, take your newly recorded mp3 and transfer it to your phone and compare it to the original version
it will be louder still not great but thats due to the dhd's speaker but it will be more audible
