To give a meaningful answer, could you post again and include the following info:
what make and model of phone
which version of ubuntu and 32 or 64 bit
which rom/android version were you running (which did connect?)
which rom have you installed which does not connect
why are you trying to connect to the PC
Some roms can make the phone act as a usb storage device and some dont. Ubuntu (linux generally) is problematic wired connections with mtp devices.
I dual boot win7 on a PC purely so that I have windows available when I want to connect to an android device (seems silly that linux wont play with android, but thats what I have found). I have had no issues connecting my android with ubuntu PCX via ftp (wifi) but it depends what you are trying to do..
