Help Device not recognizing touch

Hi, Im using a Lenovo android tablet that's 2 years old. I haven't used it in a bout a month or so and when I turned it on, the lock screen comes up but it won't swipe when I try to manipulate the lock.
I tried to turn device off and get the message "do you want to shut down?", OK or Cancel..again, neither of those options will recognize my touch or swipe.
I've also toggled the lock switch on the side of the unit and it doesn't help
Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Hello all. I've solved my own problem. For some reason even tho the battery was 93% charged, I plugged it in and once it hit 100% I was able to manipulate the touch screen.
