I was wondering if having your tablet above a vent either while charging or just in general, does it make the device's battery worse? Because on my old Nexus 7, I always charges it above a cold air-blowing vent, and I didn't know why the battery was so bad afterwards. My friend at school last year told me that is the problem.

Heat is a batteries enemy. It could make it explode. Cold is a batteries enemy too. That could make it drain.
Solution: Always get a case.
Insulation is our friend!

But I've heard that charging with a case makes it slower to charge because the heat can't escape

Depends on the case maker. Incipio has some nice products that address that problem. They're expensive though.
