Has anyone, like me, who regularly uses Maps navigation, come from higher end devices with the aforementioned sensor, to using good value mid - lower end phones with decent SoC's but all missing a compass sensor.

I have been thinking about something like a Moto G5S Plus which would suit my needs.

The issue that I'm fixated on is navigation on starting taking a long time to figure where you might be facing or need to turn first.

Maybe it's not that big a deal.

It's useful for other uses of course, getting out of woods with an actual compass etc.

There are a lot of good devices with decent performance from Snapdragon mid range? processors that have no magnetometer.

This is never mentioned in reviews. I think I'll wait to get a better specced model when I start looking again.

Should I be bothered?

Has it affected you?

I do not bother with maps, only to a destination that is unknown though, but it is a good thing to think about though, i prefer google maps.

Then again, no one on this earth knows my house location, or the one way up in Boston either :D
Don't assume anything. I know where you are. ;)

I've used low end devices (Huawei P8 LIte), mid-range devices (Huawei GX-8, Huawei Honor 5X), and upper mid-range devices (Honor 8, LeEco LeMax X2, Motorola Moto X4 [current]) and some have had the sensors and others have not. I've never had a problem with GPS pickup. I even use CoPilot GPS which works with zero cell signal and the phones are able to find me with no problem.

Thanks.

I've had past weird experiences with Maps putting me precisely in a few different countries on different occasions, on a Galaxy Note 3.

I generally don't have location errors when I open Maps though, and I also use GPS Status if I have difficulty.

I don't expect it to know my orientation, particularly in a car, but it seems to get confused for a period when I start driving or walking where I think my previous GS2, Note 3 and Moto X Style didn't seem to have this slightly annoying issue.

I have not been working for a few weeks whrn I was collecting vehicles so I'm probably not explaining my issue correctly until it starts bugging me in earnest again.

I'm happier with a decent low cost of purchase phone (I tend to drop some, without the wallet case I had on the Note 3) and wondered if I am seeing a problem that's not really there.

I see the SD630 has a magnetometer and the X4 has appeal (I hope you like it), but I'm beginning to need spectacles amd not sure if I can live with a 5.2' screen, or want to pay £120 more over the G5S Plus.(I did live solely with a Moto G 2013 at 4.5' when I cracked my Style / Pure)

Anyway I start a new job next week and I'll decide next month. :)
