Yes they make money from this in that they charge you minutes. Those minutes cost you money, how much depends on the plan you have.
 
Yep, and this is EXACTLY why all carriers do this, not just Verizon

Heck, I have Sprint with ANYmobile Anytime and I still get charged minutes for calling my voicemail.
