Help Difference between Android OS on tablet or phone?

I'm looking at getting a phablet - specifically the ZTE ZMax. I need to use it for work. My job specifically requires an Android phone - not a tablet. Is there a difference between the Android OS for phones and the Android OS for tablets? Does the device identify itself as either phone or tablet? What do phablets (and specifically the ZTE ZMax) identify themselves as?

Two main differences between tablet and phone versions of Android:
First, of course, is the lack of cellphone software in tablets.
Second is software related to the display size difference.

Phablets identify as phones.

ive also noticed that easter eggs are different on tablets than phones.on tablets for ics you could zoom in on the ice cream sandwich android and it turns into the ics android doing a nyan cat thing lol.doesnt work on phones.never tried a phablet eitheir
