Disable message popups?

It used to be that you could disable the popup notification on the native (i.e., Motorola) text messaging app. I had to go back to this app after Handcent screwed up by adding its "update agent" that demands the removal of things I use without offering a justification; but that's beside the point. The native app used to have a switch in settings that would disable only the popup. I no longer see that option. Apparently, the only option I get is to disable notifications altogether, which is not desired. Anyone know how to disable the popups without losing notifications in the bar? Thanks, all.

Open your native text messaging app
Open the "Ssettings"
Scroll down to "Notifications" and un-check notifications

I tried that. The only thing it did was disable the status bar notifications, which is all I expected. It did nothing for disabling the popups, which I also expected. I miss that function. And looking at alternatives to Handcent (at least, until the programmer disables his "upgrade agent"), each has its own bars to adoption, most of them dealing with demanding access to areas of my phone that they absolutely do not need, other than for their own nefarious purposes.
