Disabling gmail app after MS exchange update

For the past 2 years I have used K9 as my mail app on my unrooted Nexus5 and have had the gmail app disabled. I dislike the gmail app because it keeps hiding emails in obscure folders. Since the gmail app update to access microsoft exchange I am nagged daily to update the app. To do this I must enable the app and then perform the update. When I then go to disable the app it reverts back to factory condition and the nagging starts again.

Is there any way of stopping this without rooting and uninstalling the app?

Not that I've ever disabled the gmail app, but I thought once an app was disabled you would no longer get update notifications or push notifications?

Is the nagging coming from the play store to update or somewhere else?

By disabling apps you will need to revert back to the factory status of an app unfortunately.

Did you go into the Play Store app, Menu, Settings, and then uncheck the box "App updates available"?

Go into your Google Settings on device and Look until you see { Connected Apps} there you will unlink any app or email, Website connected to your account on that particular device. If that doesn't do the job you can always close your Google account permanently.

Jay3001 - It looks like it comes from the play store. I attach a screenshot.

RazzMaTazz - Won't that stop all updates or is it only the notifications?

Phalon4 - Settings>Google Settings>Connected apps does not list gmail app nor does it list K9. As for my google account I need that for other things.

I am starting to think rooting is the best option. I can get rid of a lot of other bloatware apps as well.
